Financial Freedom Calculator

Estimate your freedom number and explore how long it may take to reach it.

Your assumptions

Use today’s money so the estimate stays easier to understand.

“Real return” means the estimated return after inflation. The projection assumes annual compounding and year-end investments.

Estimated freedom number

$1,200,000

Based on $48,000 of annual spending and a 4% withdrawal rate.

Current progress8%

Remaining gap

$1,100,000

Estimated timeline

22 years

At the estimated milestone

Your portfolio may reach approximately $1,216,651 in 22 years.

This simplified estimate does not account for taxes, fees, changing spending, or market volatility.

Methodology

How this calculator works.

The calculator first converts annual spending into a target portfolio using the selected withdrawal rate. It then projects the current portfolio forward one year at a time, adding the annual investment at each year-end.

Core calculation

Freedom number = Annual spending ÷ Withdrawal rate

The timeline repeats: next portfolio = current portfolio × (1 + real return) + annual investment, stopping when the target is reached or after 100 years.

01

Define the target

Annual spending is divided by the withdrawal rate to estimate the required portfolio.

02

Measure progress

The current invested portfolio is compared with the target to show the remaining gap.

03

Project the timeline

The portfolio grows by the real return and receives one contribution at each year-end.

Important assumptions

  • All values use today’s purchasing power; the real return is the return after inflation.
  • Annual spending, contributions, return, and withdrawal rate remain constant.
  • The withdrawal rate is a planning assumption, not a guarantee that money will last.
  • Taxes, fees, pensions, other income, market volatility, and sequence-of-returns risk are excluded.
